Worthing kicked off into the Heathfield 22, Heathfield ran straight back with a few missed tackles and some good offloads which seen Heathfield back in our half which gave us a penalty, Grant Wright kicked up field for Dale Bone (U15) to run on, pick up and run down the line just outside Heathfields 22, side stepping their wing and full back to touch down, Grant stepped up to convert it – 7-0.
Heathfield came straight back kicking the ball straight into our 22 with some passing in our 22 see Heathfield pack running in and putting a lot of pressure on our backs. Heathfield gained a 5metre scrum from which they scored – dubious decision by the referee. The game went on with a lot more miss tackles in midfield. In the rucks the ref must have thought Heathfield players were Worthing players as they kept coming in from off side positions and allowing them to carry on!! Heathfield scored three more tries and one conversion by half time. Throughout the first half Worthing forwards were working hard to win good ball for our backs but unfortunately the Heathfield backs were faster and gained turnover ball by isolating our ball carrier.
Half time 7 – 22
The second half with three changes in the Heathfield backs there is not a lot more to say about this half except that the game went the same as the first with the forwards winning good scrums, rucks and mauls only for our backs to run into trouble as Heathfield defended very quickly isolating our ball carrier and with turnover ball running straight down the mid field where we were miss tackling and allowing Heathfield to score. Three injuries put us down to 14 players for a good 10 minutes which changed our front and second row; our boys thought they were playing a 16 man team as the ref continued to allow Heathfield to play from off side positions which seen Heathfield running three more converted tries and one penalty. Final score 7 – 46.
You can only go on to do better in the league as we did last season, with losing the first match it has hopefully given you the determination to show the coaches, parents and other players what you can do when you play with your full team – you can beat any team with your sheer determination and comradeship.
