Andy Duckworth, Chairman of Senior Section said This is an important change for us, as it signals our intent to Sussex to establish ourselves once again as a true force in the amateur arena within Sussex. It also allows our Elite players to concentrate on advancing the club at a national level, something that we are all very supportive and proud of.
Pre-season started early for the senior squad, but this was to prove vital when the Senior 1s & 2s travelled to St Leonards for their first ever 10s tournament.
Worthing Senior 1s started off by playing the hot favourites Streatham & Croydon in their first game of the day and after a slow start drew the game 2 tries all. The Senior 1s then went on to beat Littlehampton and Rye quite convincingly before being drawn in the semi final of the main Cup competition against Rye. The Senior 1s beat Rye 4 tries to 1 to reach the final against Lewes RFC. Worthing won a hard fought final 4 tries to 3 to be crowned tournament champions & lift the cup.
Meanwhile, the Senior 2s played in the Social side of the tournament and after two tough games against strong Lewes and Burgess Hill sides they went into the Social Bowl final against another Lewes side which they were run away winners with a 4 tries to 1 victory.
The Senior 1 captain, Josh Famboy Brown commented This is an excellent start to the season and to come here and beat a number of teams from higher leagues speaks volume to the depth and talent that we have at Worthing. Hopefully we can take that forward into the season.
Congratulations to both teams for their efforts on the day and to bring back the Elite Cup and Social Bowl in their first 10s tournament was a great start to the season.
Dedication & effort came from many areas, not least of all from the Senior 2s captain Matt Thompson for organising everything and driving the mini bus, even though he was injured and unable to play.
