Early pressure from the Raiders A’s forced Canterbury to offend at the brake down, Mettres stepped up and put the first points of the day on the board with a well taken penalty giving the Raiders A’s a 3 point lead. On eight Minutes Frank Bagnall, in his first start for Raiders A’s, crossed the line on eight minutes and with a conversion from Metters gave the A’s their best start with a ten to nil lead. The A’s then went through five minutes of giving away two silly penalties which brought Canterbury right back into the game with six points.
Captain Chris Sewell, who is returning from long term injury showed why he was selected to play for the Raiders last year with some outstanding work and on 18 minutes scored the first of his two tries again converted by Metters giving the A’s a 17 to 6 lead. Unfortunately that was the last points the A’s scored in this half but again allowed the opposition back into the game with a converted try and two penalties making the score Raiders A’s 17 Canterbury 2nds 16 and half time.
After half time team talks lead by Greg Sullivan and Chris Sewell the A’s came out firing at the beginning of the second half. Tries from Chris Sewell and Ben Henderson and with man of the match Metters, who ended with stats of seven from eight, converting both tries to give the A’s 31 to 16 lead. Then came two tries in ten Minutes in a very impressive display from new boy Cameron Roberts giving the A’s a comfortable lead of 43 to 16. Canterbury then scored their only points of the half with an unconverted try moving the score to 43 to 21. The last word was left to the A’s, they continued their impressive start to the season with a great team try. This was finished off by Greg Sullivan running in from the half way show a great turn of pace beating the Canterbury speed men to score under the post. Metters converted the try to give Raiders A’s a well deserved 50 to 21 win. This team is growing in confidence every week and with players still to come in it is looking like a very exciting season for the A’s.
