It was evident from early in the game that Richmond had come to the Rugby Park intent on avenging their loss to the As at the end of last season. The game started badly for the home side, conceding an early try and it was not long before they found themselves trailing 19 0 however this was the last time that Richmond troubled the score board. Just before half time the Chris Sewell, linking up with his fellow back row Jo Heaver, crossed the line for the As first try sending them in at half time 19 5 down.
The team talk at half time was about protecting the ball and defensive organisation and it was a refocused team which took to the field for the second period. It was evident from very early on that this was going to be a much better half for the As with a try for Matt Farnes and a second for Chris Sewell, his fourth in two games since returning from a long term injury. With the home side now playing the majority of the rugby, the visitors were pressurised into conceding a penalty, which Jack Metters converted to give the As a 22 19 lead. There were notable performances throughout the side but special mention must go to two of last years colts, Connor Leeding and Barney Lyons.
This weeks result underlines the depth which is building in the Raiders squad and both the Raiders and the Raiders As will look to continue their good start to the season. Next week the As will be in action against Tonbridge Juddians IIs at The Rugby Park, kick off 3-00pm and will be aiming to maintain their 100% record in the league.
