Worthing U14's v Horsham

Worthing U14’s first home game of the 2009/2010 League campaign was against newly promoted Horsham. Torrential rain greeted both teams; however this failed to dampen the early exchanges which saw Worthing enjoying the early possession with the forwards competing well against a far larger Horsham pack. Worthing failed to capitalise on their early possession & territorial advantage and were denied a couple of point scoring opportunities by robust Horsham defending. more...

First Sussex A League Win For U14's

Worthing U14s V Heathfield and Waldron 18/10/09,

Without a cloud in the sky the U14s players, parents and a couple of Grandparents made the hour long journey to Cross in hand for their first Sussex A league of the season. Heathfield were for us an unknown quantity having won the East Sussex B league last season with only one defeat and gaining promotion to the A league.
Worthing were fielding a strong side and with some new players strengthening the backs the coaching team and I were looking for a good game.

u14s 12 - 33 Esher

Photos courtesy of Dave Cuthbertson

Bob scored twice early in the second half to keep Worthing in contention until a consistent lack of tackling let three well worked - but defendable - attacks from Esher tally up to 12-33 loss.

Our lack of experience in the backs, with several players once again playing out of position, was exploited by a well drilled Esher backline. The Esher back row all had good games too and with two thirds of our first choice back row playing in the centres we couldn't nullify them at the breakdown and play off of a more level playing field. Some of the skills displayed by both teams was excellent, but some displayed by Worthing was, quite frankly, shocking. Esher had far more experience and skill on display today and it showed. Good commitment from some but much more oomph needed from others.

u14s 15 - 8 @ Bognor

Tries from Dale, David and Sam took Worthing to a well deserved win to secure a valuable four pointer, and a total of a hopefully unassailable 21 points in the league. A hard fought game in difficult conditions that was decided - on the score board at least - only in the last few moments. more...

u14 22-10 Horsham

Worthing beat Horsham today in their penultimate league game and scored a valuable bonus point into the bargain. With tries from Sam, Dale, Hilda and Jacob, Horsham really only came into the game in the last few minutes when a lack of concentration allowed Horsham to come back with one extremely soft try and one well worked try. You would have thought that we had lost by the guys' reactions afterwards.

After a quick turnover right from the first scrum Worthing were in control of the game from the start as Sam took an outside pop from Rhys on the break to scorch through from halfway to score. Worthing's new levels of fitness this season were apparent as although Horsham had their fair share of ball they never really looked like scoring. Dale racing into the corner just before half time put the home side 10-0 in front at the break.

The second half started better for the visitors but a close range effort from Hilda early on kept Worthing in front and they never looked like surrendering the lead. With added impetus in the last ten minutes to go for the bonus point with a fourth try Worthing upped the effort and before long Jacob had a typical arcing run and was over for the bonus point. Once again Ryan cursing his try scorers for not making it easy for him to convert.

The last few minutes saw the two Horsham tries and the boys were disappointed to not nil them with a bonus point to boot. Hey ho, lesson learned. Let's take that disappointment into the final league game against Bognor and make sure that we keep our concentration.

u14s 32 - 10 Crawley

Worthing blasted through Crawley six times in a dominant display that was underpinned by Worthing's fitness and control.

Whereas Worthing had a committed final fifteen minutes against Midhurst the week before this was a committed, energetic performance from the start. more...

u14s 10 - 10 Midhurst

This is a game that may well be looked back on, as the season draws to a close, as possibly the defining moment of the U14 A's season.

Playing into a fierce gusting wind throughout the first half which made kicking and passing difficult, albeit for both teams, Worthing went ahead midway through the first half with a well practiced backs move that saw Sam race around a panicked covering Midhurst defence from over halfway. With a conversion from the right touchline, against a very strong head-on wind, Ryan couldn't quite make the conversion and the score stood at 5-0 to the home team. more...

u14s 59 - Chichester 'B'

After a resounding victory against Haslemere a fortnight ago (62-0) it was important for the boys to get off to a successful start in the league. Stand-in captain David Neale led by example with some crunching, driving tackles that knocked any momentum out of any Chi attack in midfield, especially as David more often than not also robbed the ball as he was driving the Chi 12 backwards. All of his hard work was rewarded when he went over to score later on after another crunching tackle within the Chi 22, stealing the ball and then driving low for the line. Rhys Thompson bagged a hat-trick after excellent support play all through the game and then picking great lines to run through on to score. Dale Bone's hat-trick took him to the top of the U14s scorers' table with 30 points . Sam Cuthbertson hit the turbo button once again after good hands took a wayward pass after an arcing run from Jacob Gwilliam and he raced in from the halfway line. Jacob was later rewarded with a try of his own after yet another lovely balanced run which made up, some of the way, for a perfectly good try that he had had disallowed a few moments before.
